For Stiny Monkelbaan, the creation of every new portrait
or village view is a challenge. Her "studio"
is her subject's home. She paints people in their own
environments
She begins by asking a subject for his or her favorite
color.
She then uses this favorite color and the complementary
color respectively for fore- and background,capturing
in each portrait the essence of the person being painted.
Monkelbaan sketches mostly with lead pencil on the slightly
wet back ground.
This makes the work spontaneous and unaffected and shows
emotion and vulnerability.
Stiny Monkelbaan also paints portraits from photographs.
Since 2007, Stiny has been painting more and more landscapes,
with the concentration on villages. For these village
views, she most often paints from photographs. Her style
is purposeful, as she wishes to give no more than an
impression of a street, a church, a facade of buildings
or some other feature that characterizes the particular
village. As with her portraiture, she adheres to her

Voor Stiny Monkelbaan is het maken van ieder nieuw portret
of dorpsgezicht een uitdaging. Meestal werkt ze bij
de geportretteerde thuis, zo kan ze de mensen in hun
eigen omgeving schilderen. Ze begint met het vragen
naar de geportretteerde zijn of haar lievelingskleur.
Ze gebruikt deze lievelingskleur en de complementaire
kleur dan in respectievelijk voor- en achtergrond. Stiny
probeert in elk portret de essentie van de persoon weer
te geven. Monkelbaan schetst meestal met potlood in
de nog natte achtergrond verf. Dit maakt het werk spontaan.
Verder laat het werk emotie en kwetsbaarheid zien. Stiny
maakt ook portretten vanaf foto’s. Sinds 2007
maakt Stiny vooral dorpsgezichten.
Ook hiervoor gebruikt ze foto’s. Ze geeft niet
meer dan een impressie van een straat, kerk, gebouw
etc..Monkelbaan maakt ook bij deze dorpsgezichten weer
gebruik van complementaire kleuren.
